Kherson official, activist Handziuk, who campaigned against local separatists and corrupt law enforcers, was doused with acid this morning, - journalist. VIDEO

Kherson City Council executive officer, Kateryna Handziuk, who tried to deal with local separatists and harshly criticized the authorities, namely the law enforcement officials, was doused with acid in Kherson early on July 31.

Journalist Serhii Nikitenko wrote on social media, Censor.NET reports.

"Kateryna Handziuk was attacked in Kherson this morning. The assailant was on the watch for her outside the entrance hall and doused Katia with acid. She suffered serious burns. She is in the hospital now. No details so far. Please, do not spread unchecked information," the journalist wrote.

Khersontsi media outlet reported quoting a spokesperson for the local police that the attack was committed at about 8:30 a.m. A male, looking 20-25 years of age, ran up to her and doused "corrosive liquid" into her face after which he eventually fled. The police are looking for the person matching the description provided by the eyewitnesses.

Police spokeswoman Iryna Atamanenko said that the law enforcers were going to initiate a criminal case into hooliganism as soon as the doctors came up with their conclusions.

Preliminary, the activist has her body, hands and left eye burnt with "an unidentified liquid, presumably an acid."

Along with local community members, Handziuk held numerous campaigns against local separatists.
