Holding elections in Donbas not safe now but dragging this issue is unacceptable, Steinmeier says

The long-term de-escalation in the east of Ukraine is possible only on condition of holding of elections in the occupied territories under the Ukrainian legislation. At the same time, the situation in the ATO area has deteriorated making it impossible to provide security for holding of the elections in such conditions.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in Berlin, Censor.NET reports citing Liga.

"If we overcome these obstacles, if the law on elections in the Donbas is adopted and elections have been held, which certainly requires ensuring security conditions, there will be a prospect of a long-term settlement of the conflict," the minister said.

Steinmeier stressed that further delay in the adoption of the law is unacceptable. He also recalled that such a law should be passed before the end of January as it was clearly confirmed at the meeting of presidents and foreign ministers of Germany, France, Ukraine, and Russia in Paris.

"If we succeed, we will be able to find solutions to other issues," German diplomat said.
