Steinmeier: Easing of sanctions against Russia depends on Minsk agreements implementation progress

Easing of EU sanctions against the Russian Federation depends on progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements designed to settle the situation in Ukraine.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine, Censor.NET reports.

He says that the greater the Minsk agreements implementation progress is, the sooner the sanctions easing issue can be tackled. Steinmeier stressed the importance of fostering joint efforts to ensure the soonest fulfillment of the Minsk agreements.

That was his response to the question whether the decision to partially or fully lift sanctions against Russia would be taken as early as at the EU summit in June.

He also quoted his Italian counterpart Paolo Gentiloni, who said assessments of Berlin and Paris regarding the implementation of the Minsk agreements on settlement of the conflict in Ukraine would be prevailing in taking decision on the need to extend sanctions.
