The newspaper pointed out at Russian Defense Minister Shoigu boasting of strengthening troops near Ukrainian border. He is quoted as having said that "the threat from Ukraine and NATO is increasing," which has forced the Russian army to form four new divisions and nine brigades in its Southern Military District.
In addition, Russia has deployed Iskander missiles near Ukraine as well.
Naval forces of Russia in the region have also received new ammunition, including C-400 Taifun antiaircraft missiles.
The detachments of the Southern Military District have received the total about 4,000 units of new fighting vehicles, aircraft and missiles over the past two years, Shoigu said.
"The point of such changes is obvious: Russia is creating three large land groups at Ukraine's border for an unexpected offensive towards Kyiv, which is just 270 km from the border. In the south, [it is creating groups] with the purpose of surrounding major forces of the Ukrainian army in the left-bank Ukraine," Russian military expert Ruslan Pukhov commented on the situation.
He said to Gazeta Wyborcza that despite the West's allegations, Russian troops mobilization at the Ukrainian border is not higher than that at the Baltic states' or Polish borders.
Russia is also strengthening its positions in the west near the Belorussian border. The total of 10,000 soldiers are stationed in Smolensk area as the 144th motorized infantry division.
Earlier, The National Interest reported that extensive militarization will harm Russia's combat capability due to lack of reserve military and poor abilities of Russian economy.
